This blog post is an essay my father, the Rev. Carleton Schaller Jr., wrote in 1993 for the family about the history of George Ross Mackenzie (1820 - 1892), the fourth President of Singer Manufacturing Co and my great-great grandfather.
We are getting prepared for our journey from Florida to Virginia then to Maine and New Hampshire. The plan along the way it to hit baseball parks, historical sites and just to enjoy the ride.
Why you might ask do I have a genealogy blog on my travel site? Studying genealogy and the history of ancestral migration, it is all about traveling.
We have settled down in central Florida in a small community with lots of activities and a 9-hole golf course. While I have never really golfed in my life, I decided to take a stab at it. The community, Lakes at Leesburg, has about five small lakes with the golf course weaving in and out of the lakes.
For my mother's birthday, we took a boat ride on Lake Dora in Mount Dora, Florida. The ride took us across the lake through the Dora Canal, which felt tropical and was teaming with wildlife.
We couldn't wait for the Baseball season to start so we headed down to see some Spring Training games near Clermont.
